German Inversters Eye Ghana

Published on November 2, 2012 Dr. Kwabena Dufuor, Finance Minister and Economic Planning Ghana has become a very attractive destination for German investors and companies, says Thomas Wimmer, Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Ghana. According to Mr. Wimmer, the rich commodities in Ghana and the growing and educated middle-class are fast making Ghana a market friendly environment for foreign companies. “More than anything else Ghana is one of the truly stable, peaceful and democratic countries in the region. This is what brings German businesses here,” he told hundreds of guests gathered at the prestigious Labadi Beach hotel last week to celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of the Unification of East and West Germany. The German Embassy boss dispelled the notion that the interest of German companies in Ghana may be due to an intention to exploit the expanded mineral resources and hydrocarbon base of the country, “German companies are known in Ghana to have a sustained interest in the country. They haven’t come in for the “gold rush” in oil and gas, only, but most of them have been here well before. And my impression is clearly that this commitment is well received by the Ghanaian business partners,” Wimmer explained. Germany is one of Ghana’s biggest trading partners in Europe as the country purchase exports such as cocoa and other traditional foodstuff. “But there is a tendency towards greater diversification that we are happy about,” Mr. Wimmer noted. The Ghanaian-German trade volumhe grew more than 17 per cent last year-a rate well above the already impressive GDP of the country. Ghana and German have cordial bilateral relations since the 1960s. Germany has contributed a cumulative amount of Euro 1.25 billion to assist socio-economic development in Ghana. “Ghana has for decades been one of these cherished partners. We share many common values and convictions about democracy, good governance, peace and regional stability, which brings us together in tackling many regional and global challenges,” the German diplomat noted.
